if you can't find poetry in this moment, you can't find poetry.

finn and i had a brief discussion a short while ago this morning pertaining to the enormity of this day. nope, i'm not talking about his imminent first bath today (post to come soon), but in the inauguration of obama. i'm proud to say that my son was alive to see an african-american man become the president. regardless of one's political standings and opinions this is a momentous and great day for our nation. what i told finn was that this represents our nations ability to be open to others, to love others, to be accepting of those that are different than ourselves. to me, this is one of the most important tenants of my life. i'm not a perfect person by any means, but i do try to be accepting of those that are different than me. at least they get a chance for first impressions (wink, wink). i never thought i'd see the day that this country would elect an african-american, or any other "minority" to the oval office. it's a historic day, and i hope that our country will see change of all varieties as obama suggests. i hope so for my own son now. that when he is my age, we will live in a less prejudiced time. where people are more caring and loving of others. where we celebrate our differences instead of living in fear of them. we'll see.

and since everyone has hope that obama will resolve all our strifes, i'm hoping he'll wipe out puppy mills, encourage and bring massive growth to the local, organic slow foods movement and tighten up on the horrible treatment of commercial farm animals, increase light rail transit, make good on his promises of pursuing alternative energies and actually overhaul the way government and their programs are run. because i want finn to live in a world where accountability, honesty, fairness and protecting those that are unable to protect themselves are a focus of this nation, not just a pipe dream or a oft used bit of lip service during an election year.
